Some players use a variety of hands in different situations. Some use passive hands and others use aggressive ones. Generally, players know which spots are loose and which are tight. They also estimate the frequency of action and the visual range of each hand. Having a wide range of hands is useful for bluffing and aggressive play. Those with a lot of hands in their range are generally looser. If you find yourself at a loose spot, it is a good idea to raise. However, if you feel you are in a tight spot, you may want to fold.

After a round of betting, the player with the highest card in his or her hand wins the pot. A straight or flush is the second highest card in the hand. In some rarer versions of Short Deck, a three of a kind beats a straight.
